Snack Shack

Snack Shack – Where learning meets lunch

Every Tuesday, Snack Shack becomes a lively and exciting part of our school community. This student-led initiative is proudly run by our secondary students, working closely with dedicated staff members to ensure smooth and successful operations. Snack Shack offers a variety of tasty, affordable lunch options, catering to all students from Kindergarten to Year 12. Prices are kept low, ranging from 50 cents to $2, making it accessible for everyone.

Student involvement and real-world experience
Operating from our specially designed, purpose-built kitchen, secondary students take on the full responsibility of preparing and serving the food. This hands-on involvement allows them to develop valuable practical skills such as cooking, food preparation, hygiene, and customer service. By managing real food service tasks like food handling and serving, students gain experience that supports their transition to work and adult life.

Inclusive and accessible ordering system
Snack Shack is committed to being inclusive and accessible to all students. To help students who may have communication or learning challenges, we provide visual communication supports, including easy-to-understand Boardmaker visuals. These visual aids guide students step-by-step through the ordering process, empowering them to independently select and order their food. This system builds confidence and encourages autonomy, ensuring every student can participate fully.

Life skill development opportunities
More than just offering food, Snack Shack is an important educational program that builds essential life skills in a supportive environment. Students practicing communication learn to interact politely and clearly when taking and fulfiling orders. Teamwork is encouraged as students collaborate to keep the service efficient and welcoming. Money management skills are developed through handling cash and providing correct change. Additionally, students practice safe food handling procedures, learning about hygiene and safety rules important in any food-related job.

Community and social engagement
Snack Shack also promotes a sense of community. It provides a social hub where students from all years can come together, share experiences, and build friendships. The supportive atmosphere encourages positive social interactions in a real-world setting, reinforcing social skills and boosting confidence.

By participating in Snack Shack, students not only enjoy nourishing meals but also grow in independence, responsibility, and social confidence—skills that will benefit them far beyond their school years.
