Caroline Chisholm School – A Road Safety Education Journey
Caroline Chisholm School, a K–12 school specialising in supporting students with special needs, has proudly partnered with the Road Safety Education team to strengthen road safety awareness across our school community. Through a whole-school approach, we have created a safe and inclusive environment where students can learn, practise, and apply vital road safety knowledge and skills.
This comprehensive strategy has led to sustained, positive behaviour change among students and their families, highlighting the school’s ongoing commitment to student safety and wellbeing.
As part of this commitment, several key road safety measures have been implemented:
A designated student crossing and fencing have been installed at the front of the school to support safer pedestrian access.
Designated drop-off and pick-up areas have been introduced to streamline traffic and reduce risk during busy times.
Internal fencing has been added to support taxi drop-off and pick-up zones, maintaining safety for all students.
Parents are encouraged to use “safety doors”, ensuring students exit vehicles from the kerbside rather than the roadside.
Students have engaged in road safety learning through interactive programs such as Safety Town, helping them to develop essential skills and knowledge for safe travel.
A whole-school professional learning day was held for staff, with the Road Safety Education team delivering training specifically tailored to the unique needs of our school environment.
The school also worked closely with local council and police, identifying and enacting changes that benefit the broader school community and improve safety in and around the school grounds.
