Visual Communication at Caroline Chisholm School
At Caroline Chisholm School, we are committed to creating an inclusive environment where every student’s voice is heard. One of the ways we do this is by incorporating Visual Communication Boards throughout the school. These boards are thoughtfully placed in playground areas, ensuring that all students have easy access to them whenever they need to communicate their wants, needs, or emotions.
What makes these boards even more effective is the consistency in the visuals used. The same Boardmaker visuals featured on the communication boards in the playground are also used by our staff in classroom settings. This creates a seamless experience for students, as they can easily recognise and use the same visuals across different environments. Whether they are in the playground or in class, students will have access to the same set of symbols, making it easier for them to identify and communicate what they need with confidence.
These boards have already proven invaluable in helping students express themselves clearly, whether it's to ask for help, indicate their preferences, or share how they’re feeling. The consistency of the visuals allows students to become familiar with and confident in using them, regardless of their location within the school.
At Caroline Chisholm School, we are dedicated to ensuring every student has the tools they need to succeed. By maintaining uniformity in the visuals across both playground and classroom settings, we are helping all students feel empowered and engaged throughout their school day.
